Greebles??? where did the term come from....

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Greebles??? where did the term come from....

Post by Curtw_944 »

Where did the term Greebles come from? I know what they are for the most part but am curious who came up with the term.

Also Where do most of you get your's from? Plane kits, spare kits, make them, etc... I am mainly doing trek related kits for now and I am intrestred in doing a borg ship in the near future. And would like to know the pest source for these little gems.

Do you mean greeblies?

I've seen a number of definitions:
Small crumbs leftover in your sandwich wrapper.
Crumbs remaining from carrying food in your pockets.
All basically mean assorted little bits and pieces.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage
to change the things I cannot accept, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill today because they got on my nerves.

And help me to remember when I'm having a bad day and it seems that people are trying to wind me up, it takes 42 muscles to frown, 28 to smile
and only 4 to extend my arm and smack someone in the mouth!

Damn were good.

No one outside of the modelling hobby would believe the level of attention to detail required - even to the language involved :D

When I lived down in the Maritimes, we in the MSFM called greeblies "kibblie bits". I still use this term, its only been in the forum here that I've used greeblie. Our term for it came from a the name of a dry dog food (Kibbles'n'Bits) available in Canada.

Perhaps a lot of excess stuff left behind by mice. :D :D

Just playin'.

All of my greebles come from parts left over from other kits I have... people giving me their broken models... parts from brand new kits (generally tank parts and battleship or other modern era warship kits).

Then of course there is just seeing a cool looking item that isn't even a 'real' part. Just something that looks cool.
I used left over pieces of a vinyl screen and bendable straws for some of these details.

Some of these greeblies are pretty obvious, others are not. They were just in my little parts drawers.

Anyway, that is where I, and I believe most modelers, get their greeblies from.

Greeblies shown in natura.

Electronic components, butane lighter parts, broken-down disposable razors, disassembled pens, computer hard drive heads, printer gears, mouse rollers...

Paint them over in the same color and voilà.
Sheer elegance in its simplicity.

If you take these detail items and make something that looks like a 1940s pin-up, would you call it "Betty Greeble"?

I think I remember first hearing the word in an article about the ILM model shop in the late 70's, (back when ILM was still new and cool). Can't remember for sure though.

Bread crumb thing...

As children, my sister and I used to "make" greeblies when ever we made tempura, or onion rings. Greeblies were produced by "accidently" dripping batter into the hot oil.

I've wanted to ask this question for a while. I know what it represented, just not what it meant. Didn't want to look silly  :D

Good info. More to baffle the wife with.

In high school, I wrote an article about John Dykstra. I seem to remember during my research, that somebody at ILM actually coined the phrase (as it applies to building SFX models) when they were building the ships for filming Star Wars. The name stuck when one of the model makers mentioned it during an interview for a making of Star Wars documentary.

I didn't think it was an attack . . .I wanted to mention how I got my spin on the term . . .the parts of the model that are it's giblets. When you get the kit the specialty parts are in a baggy tucked in the middle of the hull. ;)

I don't normally eat giblets but these docking claw parts looked tasty:

Howdy,
I don't think greeblies was an ILM thing "nurnies" was what ILM called (extra added details). the Word though was coined by Tom Scherman and later used by the likes of Greg jien , Phil Tippet, Dennis Murrin(sp?), John Dykstra, Pat Mclung..everybody loved Tom :)
I believe Greeblies came from Pinewood Studios in UK
I'll ask my friend that used to work there..see if he knows anything...have fun with this!
best ,
Will
If you can dream it, I can build it, and probably already have......:) William
