Precleaning resin parts prior to assembly and paint

Post by stan »

Like the title says... what's best? I've used dish washing liquid and even alchol. Sometimes I still have paint flake off. I use enamels most of the time. Thanks.

I use an abrasive powdered cleaner like Comet, Ajax, or Bar Keeper's Friend. Use an old toothbrush and a little warm water to scrub the resin pieces, rinse them thoroughly, then let them dry overnight. Comet won't harm the resin, but will cut through any mold release agent.

Everybody has their way of doing things, but what I do (regarding a resin kit) I assemble it first then clean as Romulan Spy says. Once dry, I prime the kit and lightly sand it. Rinse and let dry and then paint.

Reason why I assemble it first... the kit will get dirt from the assembling process... puttying, sanding, puttying, sanding, filling, etc. So I save a step on cleaning it but doing it after assembling.

Either way is fine.

Just a preference.

I like soaking mine in a dedicated degreaser like Orange Clean for a while and scrubbing then down when they come out of the bath.

I can't prove it but I think the Orange Clean makes for a better resin surface as it gets in the pinholes and makes them swell making for fewer pinholes.

I've used a product that I learned of from the Hobby Fanatics forum (Anime figures) - Castrol Super Clean. I usually soak in that overnight, followed by a rinse and maybe scrub with comet or the like if necessary.

Assemble, then clean with regular soap and water before assemly.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give one of them a try on my Y-Wing when I start it.
