A black CA related question (am I doing something wrong?)

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

A black CA related question (am I doing something wrong?)

Post by Shinnentai »

I while back I broke down and ordered some of the Wave black CA, as it's got nothing but good word of mouth. When I tried it out though, the results were rubbish.

I tried it as a minor seam filler/correcter, similar to what one might use the Squardron + nail polish remover technique for.

Even with the bottle fully shaken up/mixed there were MASSIVE shrinkadge issues (the most I've ever seen in anything short of Mr. Surfacer), compounded by a tendancy for the CA to seperate from the black filler while curing, creating crackly floes of black, veined/surrounded with invisibly clear but tough as nails hardened CA.

I am now trying to figure out the best way to recover the parts it ruined. The seperated clear CA is x10 tougher than the the surrounding plastic, making sanding or even filing it down very tricky. Everything I try wears down the plastic while leaving the CA untouched.

Right now I hate the stuff with a passion. Testors' plaster-in-a-tube can at least be removed so you can try again with something else, but this stuff is actively destructive to the projects I use it on. I've gone back to using a combo of Aves and SGT (which works like a dream, contrary to the SM store's rather strange characterization).

I can't help but think I'm missing something. Every one raves about the black CA, citing properties in complete contradiction to the behavior of the stuff I tried.

Did I get a bad batch? Did I do something wrong? Has anyone had issues like this with black CA, or are there any pointers in using it that might steer me back onto the path?

How cold/hot is it on Planet Blortch? Could environmental factors (heat, humidity, pressure) have played a role?

I've never seen it do anything even remotely like you describe. Bad batch? I guess so.

I've had that happen with the American black CA but never with the Wave stuff.

I'd guess bad batch or it got frozen somewhere along the way (could cause chemical seperation).

Really, it's dang good stuff usually. I'm on my third bottle.

I live in San Diego, so even when it's "cold", it's really just slightly nippy. Humidity ranges across the whole scale though, depending on the season and weather.

John says you must have gotten a bad bottle because he's never heard of that. If you bought it from the SSM store, we'll send you a replacement. Just PM me your name and address.

Is this plastic thingy on the counter a model part or can I throw it away?

That does sound strange to me. I did find some odd surfaces when I hit it with accellerator. I also found to fill panel lines I preferred to thin it with super-thin CA, and apply with a capillary applicator.
