Post by Thomas E. Johnson »

What are the brightest white LEDs that are available that are in the 5mm-8mm range?

I got some 5 mm leds from Ebay that claim to be rated at 40,000 mcd. A maximum rating, obviously.

Those only have a viewing angle of 20 degrees. I need ones that have 100 degrees or more.

That's the problem. The combination of 'bright' and 'wide angle' is usually difficult to find. Luxeons are good at this, but may be too much of a good thing.

Could you use an array of about five in a starburst pattern?

Certainly you could. Would it do what you want? That depends on what you want to do with them. BTW, another manufacturer (Lite-on, I think) is making a series of leds much like the Luxeons.

They have a range of very bright white LEDs with various viewing angles from 15 degress to 360 degrees.

A new one from them is a "warm white" led. It's only available at 35 degress, but it might be interesting to try them out with the blueish white LEDs.
