Minwax Polycrylic

Post by Cyber-Sith »

I thought I'd throw this in the mix.

Has Anybody ever used the Minwax Polycrylic
Clear poly finish for a gloss coat as opposed to future?

Not sure how you're coming up with that if you haven't used it.

Minwax Polycrylic is water based and doesn't hardly have any smell at all. Future's odor is a lot stronger. I've used it for wood shelves in the past and I've been happy with the results however it's very, very thick, takes a lot longer to dry (and cure) and there is no indication that it should be used with plastics (or resins for that matter). Hence, I would not recommend it for models.

Stick with Future.

I agree with Hawk, and being a woodworker of many years, I re-iterate

The Minwax is formulated specifically for wood products, I have no idea what it'll do to plastics.

For now, stick to the Future

At some point I'll take one of my old - not to be rebuilt kits and give it a try.

Till I test and report, keep it away from your styrene/resin models

UHm, based off this

Says it's 35% Dimethyl ether.

Yeah... um... don't drink it or use it as a dessert topping and you'll be fine.

It's also found in 90% of the personal hygiene products on the market as well including shampoo, deodorant, mousse, hair gel and various topical products for pets. I wouldn't get too worried about it.

Don't use it on models, though. :D
