Removing paint from plastic kit

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Removing paint from plastic kit

Post by Bradleyfett »

I am reworking my MPC Black Hole CYGNUS that I built in middle school. Fortunately, back then I didn't do a lot of painting on it- like everyone else (I could never figure out how to paint that kit), so its mostly still raw silver/gray plastic. The only painting I did was with a Testors flat black paint marker.

What is the best way to gently scrub off the flat black without damaging the plastic of this rare kit?

Castrol Super Clean (Big Purple Jug) is my paint remover of choice. It will remove most paint overnight with no damage to plastic. You may have to use an old toothbrush for the cracks and crevices. It will dissolve any filler putty you may have applied.

It is available at most big box retailers and auto parts stores.

Here it is in action...

Soak it in Simple Green (cleaner or automotive aisle at walmart). I've only used it on wargames minis, but it doesn't eat the metal or plastic ones but gets paint off quick (overnight).

THere is a sticky thread in Finishing for this very subject.
