Painting PVC

Post by danald »

I acquired a Argonauts Huter Killer tank and T-800 Endo-skeleton. I want to use Aclad II. do you know if this is compatible with PVC or vinyl?

In order to use Alclad properly, you have to prime it with gloss black first. So it depends on what type of gloss black paint you use. And I'm at a loss here! I don't have a lot of experience with vinyl. I know acrylic will stick to it, but will enamel, or lacquer?

I've read where you need acrylics for vinyl.

IIRC, you can do enamel on vinyl, provided you lay down a good primer coat. The best for vinyl (I think!) was Krylon sandable primer.

Can anybody confirm that?

I've used Mr. Surfacer to get a tooth on vinyl. And once you've got that you should be able to get Alclad's gloss black to stick to that.

If it were me, I would go to the auto parts store like autozone and get duplicolor self etching primer(its an olive drab color); then go with your black undercoat then topcoat as has been suggested. The primer etches itself into materials like this.

Self etching primers are made to work with metal by gently oxidizing the surface which may be too strong for vinyl. Could, possibly, even render it into a shapeless blob. Try it on a piece of scrap first.

The kit is the softer pvc, not typical hard pvc used in pipes. The additional plasticizers tend to make it more susceptible to harsh chemicals.

Rodger that Kylwel! You are right, I was thinking of the harder type of PVC. I agree with testing a new method always on something similar to what you are using. I tried stripping paint with acetone once on a 1/1000 nx01. It reduced it to a blob of styrene! LOL!
