Applying Dullcote w/ airbrush

Post by Dukat, S.G. »

All,

I've always had awesome results with Testor's Dullcote cans (not so much Model Master's Lusterless, though ... ?!). I've perfected my "misting" technique and can always count on a very durable, perfectly flat finish.

I'm curious, however ... I've got a glass bottle of Dullcote and, since I'm fresh out of Dullcote cans, I'm wondering how I might airbrush the stuff: PSI, distance from airbrush to model, thinner, lacquer/thinner ratio, etc.

Thanks!

I use my trusty Paasche H with a #3 tip for this.

About 15-20 psi

50/50 lacquer thinner to glosscote

2-3" back, standard airbrushing distance

Should go on slightly wet and dry within a few seconds

I find it takes 2-3 light coats to build up the flatness

I've been using the Dullcote mixed with turpentine.
It takes longer to dry than using lacquer thinner or the spray can, but produces a flat even finish.

JW Etc's matte finish.

Thinned about 10 to 1 (that 10 parts thinner to 1 part JW).

Dead flat. Very durable.
