Mold release for Mold Max 30?

Post by kitty »

What to use as mold release for a 2 part "smooth-on mold max 30" mold?
I have made the mold for the top half of thull of my 23mm long runabout.
Now i need to apply a mold release so i can make the second part of that 2-part mold without the 2 parts fusing, but it's very tiny so i need an extreme thin layer of release agent.
It's the first time i used moldmax 30, so i'm not familiar with the stuff.
Any sugestions on what best to use if you don't have a mold max release?.
Would covering the first part with wax do for instance?
If there is a generic mixture that i can use, what stuff do i need and what ratio's do i mix?

I normally use Mann 200 spray between Mold Max halves-- works great. For a tried-and-true home remedy, thin some Vaseline with mineral spirits and apply to the rubber surface with a small paint brush. Ratio? Maybe 1:1 by volume to start and add a little more mineral spirits to get a thinner mix. Take care to keep it off the master part because you might introduce some brush marks that would show up in the mold surface.

Another is Vaseline with Naptha - the Naptha is more volitile than Mineral Spirits, meaning it'll dry to just the Vaseline faster

Same caution with this mix - brush strokes on the original make sanding issues on the casts

I don't know if they sell it at hardware stores that side of 'The Pond', but Naptha is readily available here in the States

I cut vaseline with turpatine, NOT turpentine. It may be available over yonder too.

Sorry about the ebay link, but this is what I'm using when I'm molding parts. If you want, I could act as mediary and have them ship it here, and then I'd forward it to you. PM me if interested.
