Watercolor Washes, advice needed

Post by Callandor »

I am getting ready to start my first attempt at weathering using a wash. I decided to use watercolors since they are supposed to be easy to remove if I screw up. Are there any watercolor specific concerns I should look out for? Additionally, how long should I let the laquer gloss coat dry before starting the wash.

Allow the lacquer to dry for at LEAST 72 hours. Your NEXT model, use Future floor polish instead for you gloss coat. :D

Now, here's the wash:

Mix water and laundry detergent; I've tried every surfactant you can think of and laudry detergent is, by far, the best. I put water in a mixing palette, and add one or two drops of the detergent. Then I add color (I use pastel dust).

Allow it to nearly dry and wipe off. I use an old cotton tee shirt. I literally just dampen it with saliva. I just touch it to my tongue and use the damp tee-shirt to wipe away the excess. The tee-shirt works great because the material is so sheer, it can reach any recesses.

Also, if it's an aircraft, wipe in the direction of the airflow.

Ask away with any more questions. Search this forum for "pastel wash" for similar threads

I hope this helps.
