I just recently completed construction on a model kit of the millennium falcon and i'm ready to paint it. i've been on this site looking for tips and i see people talk about "weathering" and i'm not really sure what they're talking about. and does anyone have any step-by-step for painting this? thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the boards!

Couldn't have picked a better subject to learn about weathering! The Falcon was a "Piece of Junk" in the Star Wars "used" universe. Everything in Star Wars looks like it has been around for a long time. The machines are dirty, greasy, rusty, dented, blasted, and all around banged up. In order to make your model look less like a "toy", and more like a "replica" of the "real" thing, you need to simulate this wear and tear on your model. You will find all sorts of samples and How To articles here on SSM. http://www.starshipmodeler.com/tech/techmain.htm
Dremel tools and Soldering irons are great for physically damaging a kit; Add washes of grime and oil with heavily watered down acrylics; I use a lot of the Inktense colored pencils to add rust and corrosion; as well as the new Tamiya weathering pastels (a ton of fun).

There's a ton of techniques, and they are all a lot of fun to experiment with!

To weather, you need to learn three intermediate-level skills.

1.) PAstel weathering
2.) The use of washes, and when to use different kinds (water- and oil-based)
3.) Drybrushing

There are threads here brimming with advice. Read them thoroughly and you'll go far.

Also, welcome to the boards. :)
