Anywhere in particular that folx like to order their electronic components such as LEDs, resistors, ICs, etc?

Though I'm no expert, mouser.com had quick shipping and the ability to order single items, as well as in bulk when I ordered from them.

Mouser is the only place I'd recommend. I've dealt with them all personally and professionally. Hell, I'd rather order from Mouser than go to the local suppliers. I HATE DigiKey! They are slow and their online catalog is worthless.

As far as LED's, I know you said no eBay, but I order from this guy all the time. He contacts you with all necessary information and returns emails quickly!

The two places that I order from regularly are: Mouser and Digikey. I've never had trouble getting same-day shipping from Digikey, while Mouser sometimes takes longer. But Mouser often has better prices (esp. PIC-type chips).

Ok, I've been doing some ordering and here's my "results"

Jameco - fast order processing, fast shipping; even the ground service to me took only 3 days - IC's, resistors, caps, boards, wire, misc.

Unique LED's (http://www.unique-leds.com/index.php) - probably the best place I've seen. They have lots of variety, including those almost impossible to find 1.8mm LEDS (YES, just over 1/2 the size of 3mm). They also have super-brights at reasonable prices (12,000 mcd red @ .45, 12,000 mcd white @ .40 both in 5mm) - This will be the only place I get my LEDs

Digi-Key - some say yes, some say no. I'm in the yes column. Fast order confirmation, fast shipping, fast delivery (ok, so I'm in the same state as they are, might have something to do with it) - But between Jameco and Digi, I can get everything else I need.

Ok, back to working on my Rotating Bussard Collectors (sometimes working with FO is a pain - 72 #74 holes in a 7/8" diameter styrene disk) - maybe I'll post pics, drawings etc when I get further along.

Spark Fun continues to add modules and devices to their product line:

They have a small RGB LED on a board that has a programmable chip driver. You can program a specific sequence and then when power is applied to the board the LED will run that sequence.

I've always had good results with mouser, Digi-key and super bright leds. (yes, now you all know where I buy my parts!)

Thanks for posting about unique LEDs! I'd not seen them before and I LIKE those 1.8 mm LEDs. Maybe I'll come out with an accessory pack of 1.8mm LEDs for my kit.

What do you guys use for cutting and gluing fiberoptics? I've never worked with fiberoptics before...

Spru cutters, Elmer's white glue, or the new orderless super glue, or the new black CA. do not use kicker, this will over heat the fiber optic and the vapors or chemical reaction of the CA will cause the fiber optic to be come brittle there.

you shouldn't be getting the glass fiber optic cable, so you won't need fancy cutters and polishers.

the key is make sure the fiber optic is very secure, if a strand or bundle pops out of place after the model is sealed up, all that work to get the holes in place and fibers laced will be wasted.

Hobby's stock far more than 1mm F/O and at as good a price as you'll get in the UK. The Hobby's catalog is also readily available in WH Smiths, Menzies, etc. You can pay using cheque/postal order.

Here's a source someone just got some surface mount LEDs from. The price on their LEDs seems high, though the output may be vary bright compared to traditional sources of LEDs (digikey or mouser).

But the thing that caught my eye is the magnet wire that strips via heat application, aka pre tinning.

Source for FPGA type components, this basically a chip that can be figured to act like a bunch of counters AND,OR,etc flip flops and a lot more I'm really simplifying here. If you prefer to design in hardware rather than writing in C code on a micro-controller this is the option. some generate their own clocks too so you won't need even external oscillator parts.

The Xilinx FPGAs, like the Spartan family, use a configuration rom. The Coolrunner parts are not FPGAs but simple PLDs.

Take a look at Actel (now Microsemi SoC). Their FPGAs are truly flash based so they don't require a configuration rom. And the programmer is only $49. The website is www.actel.com.

so i baught my leds ina na led pack from modelers brand. and now i am lookign to replenish some of my stock. what should i take into concideration when ordering? how will i know how bright it will be? how do i know what size i should get and if its defused how do i know if its going ot be bright on the sides?

they have many packes of leds and many other components for cheep. ie 900 leds for about 25 bucks. has anyone heard of them or used them?
or is this too good to be true?

im thinking of buying from them but am kinda nervous as it does seam too good to be true.
