Selfmade vacuum chamber, plexiglass thickness

Post by trancefreak »

Hi all,

I plan to build my own vacuum chamber and did some research here
on the forums.

I plan to use a thick drain pipe with 19,6" in diameter.
These ones have a very thick wall and are able to handle high pressure so I think they are also a good choice for a vacuum chamber.

I came across a post here on the forum where someone used a 1/2"
plexiglass with a smaller diameter (I think) and that one imploded.

Does anybody know how thick the plexiglass should be when having a
diameter of about 19,6"? Is 1,3" (35 mm) thick enough?

Has anyone experience in calculating the needed thickness?

Thx in advance!

The vacume chamber I'm using is just about that size and the top is one inch thick plexi.
The unit is an industrial grade unit....I'd recommend going with that thickness for saftey.

Yes, I'll go with that thickness.

Don't be tempted to underestimate the forces involved. If you're using a pukka high vacuum pump, if the lid breaks, it will go with one hell of a bang.

Yes, I'll use a 1,18 inch (3 cm) thick plexiglass just to be on the safe side.

Thx all for the replies!

3cm (28.6mm = 1 1/8") thick should be perfect for that size.
