Sandpaper backing, Velcro style material

Post by stevipop »

Hi all,

I've been looking in vain for some time now for a material that can be glued to a sheet of sandpaper that has the properties of the loop side of the hook and loop system of Velcro.

Does anyone know of such a material?

Steve.

There's a lot of sandpaper out there with the hook-and-loop system.

I found this site by searching for 'velcro sheet' and it looks like they carry standard tape up to 6" wide, but probably have sheets too.

Try auto-body supply stores. Several manufacturers make sanding pads for orbital sanders with a Velcro backing for auto-body repair use.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry It's taken so long for me to respond, family matters kept me away.

Perhaps I was being too ambitious. Doing a search for pre-backed sanding sheets wasn't the problem, but finding 1200 or 2000 grit paper with a backing is harder to find than a fresh dump from a Unicorn.

However, your second link TER-OR led me to VELTEX® on the same site. This was the stuff, 60 inches wide too! Thanks. But now we come to another problem; I live in a cave called the UK. "Veltex? You're joking mate, never heard of it!"

Sigh.

Veltex though gave the clue to search under "loop nylon fabric", and lo, there it be. Now, please donate body parts to obtain! Aaargh!

So, it's back to the e place for some cheap discs and small rectangular sheets of 400 and 600 grit!

Bugger!

Black & Decker sells various grades of sand paper with the hook and loop fasteners for their "Mouse" sander. Not sure, but I would suspect those are available on your side of the pond.

Hi Photoguy,

Yep, available in abundance here, mainly in grades for sanding wood, which are too coarse. It's the superfine stuff I was looking for that didn't seem to be out there.

However, following rallymodeller's auto-body suggestion I managed to find velcro backed discs from 3" to 6" that go all the way up to P4000 grit. Thanks rm.

For those stumbling across this forum perhaps months from now searching for the same thing, try keywords used in conjunction with Velcro like "3M Hookit", "Mirka Abralon", "Indasa", and then include your chosen grit; P600, P800, P2000, etc.

Quick update;

For those in the UK with a Minicraft orbital sander like me, decoratingdirect sell individual 115mm x 140mm Mirka Abralon pads in five grades from 180 through to 2000 grit.
