Artificial Ocean Waves?

Post by joey_d11119 »

Hi All,

I think I have the basics down of creating model water, from painting the base, to using Mod Podge to the acrylic finish.

One thing I'm unsure of though...how do you have ocean waves near the beach? I've seen a few pics and videos but no tutorial about how to create that effect.

Any resources you can point to?

Thanks!

This guy is the grand master of modeling water:

You'll have to poke around a bit, but he does a lot of in-progress stuff and includes all the materials and supplies he uses.

Acrylic gloss gel medium is a stiffish (think mayonnaise) white gel that you can apply with a syringe or putty knife or whatever, then coax into shape with a wet paintbrush. Dries completely clear. Just the ticket for waves and ripples.

You can build bigger waves by gluing on a basic shape made of clear sheet plastic (in this case, triangles) and then sculpting the gel medium over it; then a bit of white paint on the tips of the waves after the gel is dry:
