Forum Moderation

Post by Merlin Jones »

Is there now a problem with Forum Moderation?
I ask because of the obvious spamming and lack of timely response, both features seemingly unheard of, back in the day. That said, back after the Manchester bombing, bile was both posted and permitted, apparently because all Moderators were busy with Wonderfest.

SSM Forums have always been good places to visit, for a wide variety of reasons, but largely due to the efficacy of the Moderation. It'd be a shame to lose what was once so good, so please...can the Moderators extract their digits.

So you need more of you. I doubt very much that you guys are lacking trustworthy contemporaries, so please recruit some of 'em before the trolls become an issue.

Absent some "master gatekeeper" filter to keep the spammers out, it seems this forum needs a few more sheriffs (known "good" people) with a delete power, or at least the ability to knock spam into a holding cell, non-displayable until a mod reviews it.

It may be simpler to restrict newbie accounts from posting embedded pics or links. e.g they have to reach a minimum of 100 posts before they're allowed.

And you can plonk users now by adding them to your "Foes" list. I Foe'd "Michaelken" and I'm no longer seeing his spamposts.

I've helped moderate forums in the past and would volunteer here. As it is I need to remember to not try and come here during work now because of the images they're embedding.

One of the downsides of allowing inline images. Have noticed a few recent examples of porn spam posts with NSFW (Not Safe For Work) / NSFK (Not Safe For Kids) inline images.

it's not simply porn, "Dating" is code-word for prostitution and sex trafficking. It's way beyond NSFW.

Is it possible for a new members first post or first few posts go through a moderator before they hit the board?

One of the other forums I participate in only allows posting of links after the 10th regular post. Since the spammers are invariably always including links, this might solve some of the problems. Subsequently, a similar limit to images until the 10th regular post might do the same trick. Also limiting the number of posts per time interval (say 1/hr) for a similar initial probationary period might do the trick to. All of these seem to be things that could be more or less automated, but it does depend on how much of this has been implemented by the forum software and available for use. Otherwise doing this manually would be a real headache.

Only problem with the automated screening system mentioned above is that Spammers have already worked out ways around these countermeasures. A couple of forums I visit get hit first with new member posts containing gibberish or nonsensical posts so many times until they meet the required number of posts to use links/images, then WHAM- Russian Bride Heaven visits the modeling world.

This Forum clearly no longer has active, 24/7 moderation.
There's simply no substitute for someone being able to see a New Post and to then kick it into quarantine, at the very, very least.

People have lives, and this is a *free* forum, so nobody's getting paid to moderate.

Yeah, SPAM is annoying, but just scroll past it.

You can also add the spammer to the foe list -- that way the body of the posts aren't displayed (the posts aren't removed, however -- but at least you're not scrolling through the text of that post nor have to see NSFW images). To do this, click on the poster name, then select "add foe"
