Pollyscale info needed!

Post by ralphee »

Hey all, i need some help regarding these acrylics, i recently wanted to try them out, so i bought a small range along with the 546008 thinner. I like the look of the paint, but to my dismay i tried to thin it with the airbrush thinner, right away it turned to clumps, i mean it was like a blossom, ive never seen this from any paint ive used in my brush, it just seemed like an incompatable mix to me. A reaction maybe? out of date old paint? Its very odd, the thinners is a blue in color if that helps. On another note, can i thin it with distilled water instead? Any info and help from pollyscale users would be great.

many thanks......lee

This is Pollyscale and not Polly S paint, right?

Distilled water works, so does regular tap water, windshield wiper fluid and Isopropyl alcohol.

Windshield wiper fluid is cheap and the surfactant added to help break the surface tension helps the paint as well.

I use PolyScale paints frequently and use the thinner. I haven't noticed that problem. The same company does make a line of lacquers - but they're called Floquil.

Did you stir the paint before adding the thinner? Was it smooth then? I have seen this type of acrylic paint clump in the bottle over time, particularly if the thinner evaporates over time. Was the new bottle completely full?

OK guys, i just looked again and im so glad mac mentioned polly S, as id have never guessed seeing as i know nothing on this brand. The thinners is indeed polly s, all the paint is pollyscale, Ter many thanks too, ill mess with the right thinners and try water too, now i have a shop to call and shout at, this stuff is expensive enough without some guy giving me mismatched products. Im just glad i never thinned this in my color cup for a quick shoot.

Good thing you caught it. While Polly S is also an acrylic, it has always been an "unusual" paint (compared to other acrylics) and not very forgiving when it comes to thinners.

Polly Scale is a great paint, easy to use and very forgiving of thinning ratios and thinners (with exceptions, obviously). I find its qualities are similar to Testor's Acryl, and IIRC are made by the same company.

Tell me about it mac, im so lucky as it would have clogged my brushes costing me a fortune lol, i called the guy, the price label was even over the last few letters of the thinners, he muct have just picked it up not knowing and i just assumed seeing the word polly it was the right one lol. Needless to say ill be getting a couple of litres of isopropyl if i can as i just get through so much thinners!

Isopropyl is more expensive than windshield wiper fluid - you might want to try that first... if you don't like it, just use it for your car!

Polyscale thinner is also called diosol, it's not just alcohol. There are some butyl ethers, IIRC.
