2001: A Space Odyssey HAL-9000 Interface Lighting Kit

Post by Muad »

Hello,

I own a 2001: A Space Odyssey HAL-9000 Interface kit put out by Wilco Models and noticed in an article from 2005 that a lighting kit was in the works. I’ve never seen one come up so I assume I will not see one in the near future. I’d like to put one together myself and know how to wire up an LED but it is one that uses 3 AAA batteries. I’ve seen other HAL model kits that use the AAA batteries and as a result the depth of the model is about an inch. Problem is the original HAL in the movie does not protrude from the panels that much and the Wilco kit is not an inch this (which makes it look a lot more authentic).

So here is my dilemma… How can I install an LED to my Wilco model that uses a low profile power source? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Have you considered flat batteries? You know, the kind you put in watches, computer clocks, etc? If you only want to light one LED and just need that, then all you need to do is figure the current limiting resistor with Ohms Law and away you go.

Thanks! I've seen some articles on "LED Throwies". Think I'll go that route but without the magnet.

If HAL doesn't have to be 'free standing' like just hung on a wall, you could use a "wall wart" or power supply that plugs into a wall outlet. Check out the "power sources" thread.
