how do you remove paint from vinyl?

Post by protorob »

Hello

My wife is working on a doll and she wants to strip the paint from the doll face. I have seen posts about using easy off oven cleaner. Is that an option? What would be the best solvent to use?

Thanks for your help

Oven cleaner may be a bit harsh, I've had good luck in the past using lacquer thinner.

Of course I'd test it first on the head to make sure.

Uh huh, your wife...

Seriously though, one thing that I've found with vinyl is that it can stain really easily, depending on the type of vinyl and the type of paint, so that's something to keep in mind. If it's being stripped for repainting, that's not an issue, but if she wants the bare surface it might not turn out as well as she wants.

So my question would be if you know what type of paint it is. If you're not sure, it might be tough since a lot of paint is about as durable as vinyl so stripping it might mess up the surface as well.

Definitely test on a place that's going to be hidden.
