I need to carve a dome that is 11 inches in diameter. I would like to ask what techniques are available for carving a dome from styrofoam? I could somehow make a cross section of it and try carving it that way, but it's a little 2-dimensional. Any thoughts on how to do this?
Thanks,
Kyle

Or do what I did to make the forward bulkhead for my 1/12 Mercury - make a bunch of cross-sections of the shape, cut them and glue them together to make a rough shape, fill with Bondo, sand and then fine-tune with putty.
Spray with filling primer and sand until smooth.
I them used it as a form to squash mold the bulkhead with styrene.

I used this method for my 1:144 Red October and it worked great. The only thing is that automotive filler of any kind (including Bondo) seems to eat most insulation foams, like the blue and pink kind. If you're using urethan foam it shouldn't be a problem though.Kekker wrote:Or do what I did to make the forward bulkhead for my 1/12 Mercury - make a bunch of cross-sections of the shape, cut them and glue them together to make a rough shape, fill with Bondo, sand and then fine-tune with putty.
