Coating of master?

Post by TazMan2000 »

I've noticed on this site an others that most GK'ers use a grey paint/coating before casting their part.

What is this coating, and does it improve castings or, if applied too thick, obscure detail?

Just primer. Usually Mr. Surfacer 1000 or 1200. Gray primer shows flaws the best.

Yup, just a primer. Most of mine are oxide red instead of grey. I use a scratch filling auto primer, and it's a little hot, so I need to be careful.

Not only does it help show any flaws, it covers many as well. Things like glue marks, and seams. And, it evens out the surface shininess. Most masters are made out a multitude of materials, from various sources, so they shine differently.

I know that's not what the instructions say, but the kit's wrong anyway.

Doesn't the primer stick to the molds? I had that happen with Tamiya Putty, which embedded itself in the mold.

On occasion, a small piece will flake off. But generally, no. Are you using silicone or urethane?? Makes a HUGE difference. Silicone all the way baby!!
