Tigermeet... What order to go in?
Hey guys.
There's a lot going on in my life right now, but i need to build and paint a model. I'll just be grabbing a suitable one from the pile, glueing it together and painting it up.
But i fancy doing a Tigermeet colour scheme.
So, my question to all the great painters reading this is what order should the paint be applied?
Do i paint the craft in normal grey, then mask the grey and add the tiger colours?
Or do i paint the tiger scheme, then mask that off and paint the grey over the top?
In case anyone is wondering, it's the "peeling" Tigermeet scheme i am planning.
Thanks in advance for any help you can be.

Okay. One vote for the grey first.Johnnycrash wrote:Well, since most of the it is grey, and it's the lightest colour... I would start with it.
Have you ever done a Tigermeet paintjob yourself at all?

Think I'd go with the orange first, then the base light gray of the peeling sections. Mask it all off and do the dark shadows under the peels, mask again and do the fuselage gray. Last thing would be the tiger stripes.
But, that's just me...
BTW, that is quite possibly THE coolest Tiger Meet scheme I've ever seen.

Here's the one I did a couple of years ago.

Start with the gray, mask off the area for the tiger stripes, and then the tricky part will be masking off the "tears" and painting those.

Thanks a lot for the ideas guys. It's all great food for thought!

Thanks.
I think my personal problem is that i have no idea what will look coolest in terms of where the torn parts should be on this particular model.
So i might need to paint the entire thing in the tiger stripes first, THEN work out the perfect areas to leave with the stripes...
But these ideas are all brilliant.
It's all helping me visualise what i need to do.

That makes sense.
So, if i read that correctly, a thorough coat of black, and then latex to mask off the stripes, then the yellow/orange on top, then mask that off for the grey, then the torn grey over the top of that?

I have no advice to give (I have a set of decals in 1/144 to do this bird 'cause I'm a cheater ) but I can't wait to see how you pull this off. I've seen your work so I know you can do it!
1/20.
Should be a breeze based on Robb's insight with the stripes.
Which makes a lot of sense in hindsight.
It's one of the great plus points in being able to call on so many friends with such expansive knowledge.
I will(Fingers crossed), begin the construction of the kit tomorrow at work.
Then it will be a matter of painting and masking, painting and masking, painting and masking, etc...

Ahhh....I get it now. I thought you were making a Tornado but you're actually just using the scheme on something else. Sounds cool.....can't wait to see what you come up with.Bar wrote:lakespeed wrote:What scale are you doing this in?

I am 22 hours from the project starting(With about five hours of actual work in it, including the building of the kit), and i have got the main colours done.lakespeed wrote: Ahhh....I get it now. I primed it black, masked off the stripes with Humbrol maskol, then painted it Fiat Rocket Yellow before removing the latex stripes. It still needs the grey lower painted(After i mask off the yellow/black that i want to keep)
The build folder is here for the rest of the views.

It's *THUD*
Really cool looking. Now that I know how you did that it doesn't seem as hard as I thought it might be. I really like how you masked the stripes.

I thought your "shock" emoticons suggested you thought it looked rubbish...
Right.
It's nearly all the way now, as i bought a few packs of cheapo "multi-tack" for this job. The reason for this is that in a bizarre twist of synchronicity, i found a webpage last night where a guy showed his technique of masking off camo paintjobs by using blu-tack(The actual page is here if anyone wants to check it out, go down the page by about 80% to get the pics of the masking). I had never heard of this technique(although i expect everyone reading this might now of it), so i decided to give it a go.
In any case, i went and bought some cheap stuff to try and mask the grey "peeling" panels on this one that way.
To be honest, i did NOT get the desired effect i was looking for, but when i took off the multi-tack i had laboriously applied, the effect i had was still cool in my eyes(Even though i hadn't managed to replicate the peeling tiger meet scheme). In my mind, due to only using the yellow, i think i have made this one look like a member of "Wasp Squadron"...
In any case, emboldened by my surprise at how much i liked it, i set to work immediately and started on drawing a paintline around the grey areas, then adding extreme weathering on the craft. Although i will accept criticism that i may have gone too far with it, i love what it looks like now that it's(Nearly) finished.
I plan on picking out some of the pipework i added to the engine in different colours, and also to mask off and paint some of the underside greeblies too.
In the meantime, i like the result so far.
Comments are welcomed(Don't be afraid to tell me it's rubbish...).
As usual, all images are HERE, in a chronological order.

It was a Games Workshop colour(Mithril Silver), painted on with a VERY fine brush. I tried to line each panel with it, showing the wear along all the edges.lakespeed wrote:No no no......the shock was a wow factor for me.
I think it looks great.....how did you do the weathering? It looks like bare aluminum to me.

The guys over on the Ma.K forum all do the wear and tear a lot better than i'll EVERY be able to...
Sean Brannin and Robb Merrill both make models that should be in art museums.
In comparison, i merely used the same kit they do, and slathered paint over the top.
