Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Stupid newbie mistake

Post by starmanmm »

I haven't been building anything since I lost my hobby room last fall.

Well, where I live now... I made a small workbench in the basement.

Ok...

Well, I just got this resin kit and placed it in a metal foil pan and coved it with purple power to degrease it....

Well.... that stuff ate right thru the pan and leached all over the workbench. #-o

Not only did it this stuff etch a pattern of the bottom of the pan on the workbench (which had two coats of poly) but it left a gritty residue on the model also! :finger:

Ok... so now I have it soaking in a pan of clean water and I am hoping that wet sanding the pieces with 800 or 1000 grit will take the grit off the model. [-o<

Moral of the story... if you are using purple power to clean your resin... don't do it in an alumimium foil pan. :\

Don't feel bad, I made the same mistake. Luckily I did it in to bathtub and rinsed it all down the drain, no damage to model. It was only then I read the back of the bottle. D'oh!!

What are these "mistakes" you speak of? I am not familiar with this concept. However, once I intentionally stripped the paint from a failed build with oven cleaner, taking the top layers of skin on my hands too. But "mistake" it was not.

Well... that was a scary take on "mistake".... :P

Figured to use soft scrub to see if it will take off the residue on the kit tonight.
